VW wants you to design a unique wrap for your ID. Buzz

VW and Wrapmate are launching an online 3D configurator tool so ID. Buzz owners can design their own wraps.

Volkswagen of America timed its announcement to the second annual International Volkswagen Bus Day on June 2, which celebrates all things VW bus, past and present.

VW is working with Denver-based Wrapmate, which buys, designs, prints, and installs vehicle wraps anywhere in the US. On June 2, the Wrapmate 3D configurator, launching in beta, will allow future ID. Buzz drivers to visualize and design custom wraps and decals in real-time online.

Starting in the fall of 2024, customers can order the custom wraps they created online or through their local VW dealership. Wrapmate will produce all custom graphics using premium 3M vinyl to optimize durability and vibrant color quality. The company has a network of over 2,000 certified installers across the US.

Volkswagen will periodically launch artist- and brand-partner-designed special releases through the Wrapmate program. First up is the “Love the Earth” design by visual artist Dr. Bob Hieronimus (pictured above).

In the spring of 2023, Hieronimus provided VW with a sketch of an ID. Buzz covered in the words “Love the Earth” written in 25 languages, including two indigenous languages, Māori and Navajo. In the electric ID. Buzz, VW says Hieronimus saw “a new canvas to promote the importance of global unity as a pathway to a more loving relationship with Earth.”

Hieronimus has a long and meaningful relationship with VW buses – he painted the original 1963 Standard Microbus in 1968 after the bus’s owner asked him to design a “magic bus” in which to travel to Woodstock. The “Light Bus,” as it’s known, became the iconic symbol of the Woodstock Art and Music Fair. He built a 50th-anniversary replica in 2016 (main photo).

The ID. Buzz will launch in the US later this year as a 2025 model in three trims – Pro S and Pro S Plus, along with a launch-only 1st Edition – with a 91 kWh battery and 282 horsepower for RWD models. 4Motion AWD models will have a max horsepower of 335. VW says it will announce range and pricing closer to launch.
