It looks like GM is preparing for a new rival electric SUV to arrive in the US. Jeep’s upcoming Recon EV was just caught outside GM’s Detroit headquarters. What’s going on?

Although the first all-electric Jeep, the Wagoneer S, will be at US dealerships any day, the brand’s second EV is generating even more excitement.

Jeep’s upcoming Recon EV is “inspired by the legendary Wrangler.” In its tradition, the electric SUV will have options like removable doors and windows for that open-air feel. Former Jeep CEO Christian Meunier claimed it can even cross the Rubicon trail, reaching the end of it with “enough range to drive to town and recharge.”

Leading up to its debut, we’ve seen Recon prototypes out in public testing several times. The closer it gets to production, the more it looks like a Ford Bronco.

Most recently, Jeep’s new Recon EV was caught outside of GM headquarters in Detroit. The spotting by Kindelauto suggests GM could be benchmarking its cross-town rival, preparing for its latest competitor.

GM is coming off a record year with over 114,000 EVs sold in the US in 2024. New electric models like the Chevy Equinox and Blazer EVs helped boost GM’s EV sales by 125% in the fourth quarter. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise for GM to see what Jeep maker Stellantis is launching.

Stellantis is currently launching a series of new electric vehicles (EVs) in the US, including the Jeep Wagoneer S, Dodge Charger Daytona EV, and Ram 1500 REV electric pickup.

Jeep’s first electric SUV is expected to get over 300 miles range. Based on the same STLA Large platform, the Recolikelyexpected to feature around the same.

Last month, a Recon prototype was spotted in Michigan, and the interior was almost entirely uncovered. The images from JeepReconForum reveal a display screen showing 147 miles range at 66% charge. Although that suggests a range of around 223 miles, the production model is expected to feature closer to 300 miles.

The Jeep Wagoneer S starts at $71,995 and will begin arriving at US dealerships any day (January 2025). Following its Q4 and full-year 2024 sales release, Stellantis confirmed plans to introduce the Jeep Recon in 2025.

Although prices and official specs will be released closer to launch, the Recon is expected to start at around $60,000. Higher trims, like a Rubicon model, could cost around $80,000.
