Two FUSO eCanter trucks operate in frigid climate of northern Finland – Charged EVs

German logistics company Schenker, a subsidiary of railway company Deutsche Bahn, has been operating two FUSO eCanter 7.5-ton battery-electric trucks since the beginning of the year in Kuusamo and Oulu, Finland, near the Arctic Circle.

The truck based at the Schenker terminal, which has been driven more than 1,200 km in recent weeks, is charged indoors. Electric preconditioning, which brings the vehicle to the ideal temperature before it is put into operation, increases the battery’s service life as well as the range, which is technically limited in extremely low temperatures.

FUSO’s eCanter is offered in six wheelbase options ranging from 2,500 to 4,750 millimeters, and a gross vehicle weight range of 4.25 to 8.55 tons. It has a chassis payload of up to 5 tons. The truck is powered by either a 110 kW or 129 kW motor, depending on gross vehicle weight. It delivers 430 Nm of torque and a maximum speed of 89 km/h (governed).

Depending on the wheelbase, three different battery packs are available, using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The small battery pack has a nominal capacity of 41 kWh and enables a range of up to 70 kilometers. The medium variant has a nominal capacity of 83 kWh and a range of up to 140 kilometers. The large variant offers a nominal capacity of 124 kWh and a range of up to 200 kilometers.

“I really wanted us to use the eCanter here and disprove the preconception that you can’t do anything with an electric truck in these weather conditions,” said Raino Mourujärvi, head of Terminal Area at DB Schenker Northern Finland.
