The Jupiter, TVS Motor Co’s flagship scooter, has clocked its best-ever fiscal year sales in FY2024: 844,863 units, up 16% year on year (FY2023: 729,546 units). In the 127 months or a little over a decade since the Jupiter was launched, cumulative domestic market sales have crossed the 6.43 million mark at 64,39,567 units (see decadal wholesales data table below).

Sold in 110cc and 125cc avatars, the Jupiter continues to be TVS Motor Co’s best-selling scooter as well as best-selling product in its entire two-wheeler portfolio. At 844,863 units sold in FY2024, it was TVS Motor Co’s best-selling two-wheeler, ahead of the Raider 125 (478,443 units), XL (481,803 units), Apache series (378,112 units), NTorq 125 (331,865 units).

Cumulative domestic market sales since launch in September 2013, which had hit the 6-million milestone in October 2023, were 6.43 million units at the end of April 2024. TVS Motor Co has also exported over 80,000 Jupiter scooters between FY2014 and FY2024.

FY2024 was the Jupiter’s best fiscal year performance – at 844,863 units, going ahead of the previous best of 810,916 units in FY2018.

At 844,863 units and 16% growth, FY2024 was the best-ever fiscal yet for the Jupiter, which continues to be TVS’ best-selling two-wheeler and India’s second best-selling scooter. Cumulative sales since launch: 6.43 million.

MILLIONAIRE SIX TIMES OVER AND COUNTING . . .
The TVS Jupiter is the closest rival to India’s best-selling scooter, the Honda Activa, which surpassed the 30-million-unit sales milestone in June 2023 and sold 2.25 million units in FY2024.

The TVS Jupiter gave a glimpse of its promising future soon after launch. In less than two years after launch, on May 14, 2015, the scooter crossed the 500,000-unit sales mark. Thirty months later, on June 13, 2016, it crossed the million-sales milestone for the first time. On September 26, 2017, the 2-million sales mark was surpassed. The four-million milestone came up early in FY2021 and five million in June 2022. In celebration of the five-million sales milestone, on September 23, 2022, TVS launched the 110cc Jupiter Classic in the top-of-the-line spec with disc brakes. The six-million sales milestone came up in October 2023.

What has helped the Jupiter sustain itself as well as grow its market share is TVS regularly introducing variants and upgrades. Having seen its first 125cc scooter, the NTorq make strong market gains right from launch in February 2018 and sell over 200,000 units in FY2019, TVS introduced the Jupiter 125cc in October 2021. The feature-laden, bigger and more powerful Jupiter 125cc with industry-first features such as the largest under-seat storage, segment-leading longest seat, neo-masculine styling and high mileage has proved to be a growth driver for the brand, alongside the original 110cc model.

In August 2023, TVS launched the Jupiter ZX Drum, priced at Rs 84,468 (ex-showroom Delhi). It has TVS’ Bluetooth-enabled SmartXonnect technology that allows riders to experience a host of connected features, including turn-by-turn navigation, voice assist and notification alerts. The scooter also comes with a built-in USB charger. The Jupiter ZX Drum continues to be powered by the air-cooled, 109.7cc, single-cylinder engine which develops maximum power of 7.5hp and 8.4 Nm of torque.

Bluetooth-connected TFT digital cluster on the Jupiter 125 has a host of first-in-class connected features.

RIDING THE TECH TALK
On October 17, 2023, TVS rolled out the Jupiter 125 SmartXonnect. Like the Ntorq XT, this scooter gets a TFT dash that enables you to connect your smartphone to it via Bluetooth. The Jupiter 125 is powered by an air-cooled, 124.8cc, single-cylinder engine which develops 8.1hp and 10.5 Nm torque.

The digital dash delivers new features including real-time sporting match updates, alerts from food and shopping apps, news and weather updates and voice assistance. This is addition to the usual suite of connectivity which includes call, message alerts and turn-by-turn navigation.

The TVS Jupiter range currently stands at seven variants – three each of the 110cc and 125cc variants – with prices ranging from Rs 63,100 for the base 110cc model through to Rs 81,300 for the top-end  Jupiter 125 disc-fitted variant (on-road Delhi).

JUPITER POWERS TVS SCOOTER MARKET SHARE TO 25%, HELPS MAINTAIN TEMPO IN APRIL 2024
Since its launch just over a decade years ago, the Jupiter has helped give TVS a strong position in India’s scooter market. Within a year of its launch, TVS’ scooter market share grew from 12.68% to 15.19% in FY2015 and 16.36% in FY2018, when the TVS NTorq 125 was introduced in the penultimate month of that fiscal. Since then, the Jupiter-NTorq combine has accelerated TVS’ scooter market share to 25%, which is next only to market leader Honda’s 43 percent in FY2024.

Proof of the Jupiter powering TVS’s scooter sales can be amply seen in the company’s sales numbers. Of the company’s cumulative sales of 1,02,87,670 scooters from FY2014 till end-April 2024, the Jupiter accounts for 64,39,567 units which makes for a strong contribution of 62.59 percent.

The scooter industry has opened FY2025 on a strong note with dispatches of 581,277 units in April 2024, up 25% YoY (April 2023: 464,839 units). While Honda lords over the other scooter manufacturers with 283,482 units (up 15%) and a 49% market share for last month, its year-ago April 2023 scooter market share for 53 percent.

TVS Motor Co, with 132,339 units, registered 38% YoY growth and has increased its share to 23% from 20.56% a year ago (April 2023: 95,594 units).  The other OEMs to see their market share grow are Suzuki (14.81%), India Yamaha Motor (4.26%), Bajaj Auto (1.91%) and Ather Energy (1.52%).

The importance of scooters to TVS Motor Co’s overall market standing can be gleaned from the fact that of the total 301,449 two-wheelers comprising scooters, motorcycles and mopeds the company sold in April 2024, scooters account for 44%, followed by motorcycles (127,186 units / 42% share) and mopeds (41,924 units / 14% share).
