Toyota recalls 42,199 Corolla Cross Hybrids over loss of power brake assist

Toyota is recalling certain Corolla Cross Hybrid crossovers from the first two model years of production to address a software issue that could cause power-brake assist to cut out while going around corners.

The recall includes 42,199 vehicles from model years 2023 and 2024 that may have faulty software for their skid-control units. These units manage both friction and regenerative braking, and may apply inadequate brake-fluid pressure when the brake pedal is pressed while cornering, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Inadequate pressure in the brake lines means less stopping power, which could result in longer stopping distances. Drivers may notice a hard pedal feel as well, according to the NHTSA.

Toyota estimates that 100% of the recalled vehicles have this software issue. The control unit that contains the faulty software is part of a brake-actuator assembly supplied by Bosch, and Toyota noted that some of its other models have actuators from the same supplier with similar software. However, the automaker is still confirming whether the same loss of braking power can occur in these other models.

Dealers will update the skid-control unit software free of charge. Toyota plans to mail owner notification letters November 5. Owners can also contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 for more information. Toyota’s reference number for this recall is 24TA11.

Built at an Alabama factory jointly operated with Mazda, the Corolla Cross Hybrid arrived for the 2023 model year, one model year after the non-hybrid version. It achieves 42 mpg combined with its standard all-wheel drive, not far off from the 48 mpg achieved by the smaller, more aerodynamic Corolla Hybrid sedan with all-wheel drive.
