Michigan’s first EV fast charger, funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program in partnership with the Rivian Adventure Network, is now live in Lansing.
Located in the Meijer parking lot at 6200 South Pennsylvania Avenue, the station features six DC fast chargers, including one that’s trailer-friendly.
Why this matters
Michigan is using its NEVI funds to install 40 DC fast charging stations, with nearly $23 million awarded by the Michigan Department of Transportation earlier this year. These chargers are a key piece of the state’s plan to support 2 million EVs on the road by 2030.
The NEVI program, launched under President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is designed to ensure charging stations are accessible and strategically placed along alternative fuel corridors. To qualify for funding, stations must meet specific standards, like being within a mile of an alternative fuel corridor, supporting at least four vehicles at once, and committing to five years of maintenance.
The charging stations must have 24-hour public accessibility and provide such amenities as restrooms, food and beverage, and shelter.
More DC fast chargers are on the way
This is just the start. Michigan is set to receive $110 million in NEVI funds through 2026 to roll out over 100 fast chargers statewide. Seven additional stations are already in the design phase and should be up and running by early 2025. These efforts align with other clean energy initiatives in the state, such as the MI Healthy Climate Plan and the Charge Up Michigan program.
Who can use Rivian’s NEVI chargers?
While this station is part of Rivian’s Adventure Network, it’s open to all EV drivers, not just Rivian owners. Plus, charging sessions here are powered by 100% renewable energy, so drivers can feel good about reducing their carbon footprint while they charge.
