Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 PHEV recalled due to loss of drive power, electrical issues

Mazda is recalling certain plug-in hybrid SUVs due to a software issue that could cause a loss of propulsion while in all-electric mode.

The recall encompasses 14,902 vehicles, including 2024 Mazda CX-90 three-row SUVs and a small number of 2025 Mazda CX-70s, which are essentially two-row versions of the CX-90 with a different name.

Improper software in the inverters of these vehicles could activate a fail safe that cuts power when driving in EV mode, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). If this occurs, a dashboard warning light will illuminate and a warning chime may sound as well.

The remedy is new inverter software, which has already been implemented on vehicles produced after those being recalled. Dealers will install this software free of charge. Mazda expects to mail owner notification letters Dec. 30. Owners can also contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, and select Option 6, for more information. Mazda’s reference number for this recall is 7024J.

The CX-90 plug-in hybrid arrived for the 2024 model year alongside a mild-hybrid version of the three-row crossover SUV. It teams a 2.5-liter inline-4 with an electric motor sandwiched in the 8-speed automatic transmission and a 17.8-kwh battery pack. The same powertrain is used in the two-row CX-70, which is new for 2025.

While the CX-90 received top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it’s now undergoing multiple recalls. Mazda announced two other recalls the same day as this one, for an issue with the engine stop/start system that may prevent the engine from restarting, and for instrument cluster display and function errors.
