City of Irvine cleans up while it greens up with first electric street sweeper

Residents of the City of Irvine will soon be able to enjoy paths and bikeways that are both cleaner and greener thanks to the addition of the City’s first-ever electric street sweeper from Dulevo. Meet the aptly-named Evie!

Ignoring the fact that “Evie” is the best possible name for an anthropomorphized electric vehicle, the City of Irvine, California deployed its first ever electric street sweeper just last week. A 2024 model year Dulevo D-Zero Plus sweeper, Evie was chosen not just for its quiet, zero emission operation – but because its compact size ad cab-forward controls give it superior maneuverability compared to truck-based alternatives, making it an ideal sweeping solution for municipalities and towns with tight alleys and corners.

Evie was announced earlier this month at a Citywide event celebrating the opening of Irvine’s first Class IV Protected Bikeway on Cadence between Radial and Chinon, and officially went into service last week.

The City of Irvine estimates that this single electric sweeper will save approximately 18 metric tons of carbon emissions over the course of a year. A figure the City says is equivalent to taking 4 gas-powered vehicles off City streets.

Inside Evie

As for Evie herself, the Dulevo D-Zero Plus sweeper has a maximum sweeping width of 10.5 feet, and can haul nearly 530 gallons of waste in its onboard container. The company says the D-Zero’s 75/3 kWh battery provides enough power to effectively sweep up to 42,000 square meters (over 450,000 sq. ft., or 10 acres of land) on a charge.

The D-Zero Plus also features a high level of filtration for PM10 and PM2.5 particles, often classified as “EUnited 4 Stars” filtration. That, combined with its quieter, cleaner operation when compared to the city’s existing fleet of four ICE-powered sweepers, should go a long way towards helping Irvine’s residents breathe easier in the months ahead.
