The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) is set to revolutionize the local transportation system with the introduction of a new smartphone application. This app will facilitate the prepaid booking of auto-rickshaws and taxis, ensuring a transparent and hassle-free travel experience for commuters in Bhubaneswar.
The service will be initially rolled out at Babasaheb Ambedkar Bus Terminal, Baramunda, providing passengers with the convenience of advanced ride booking through their mobile devices.
This digital move aims to streamline the process of hailing rides, offering passengers the certainty of scheduled pickups and the comfort of a planned journey.
“The prepaid model will be a significant step towards eliminating cash transactions, which often lead to fare disputes. With clear pricing, the app is expected to build trust among users and enhance their experience,” a senior BDA official said requesting anonymity for the Model Code of Conduct.
For auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers, the app presents a promising opportunity to increase their earnings and job stability.
The system is designed to allocate rides efficiently, taking into account the demand and the availability of vehicles. This means drivers can optimize their working hours and potentially earn more.
In addition to the mobile app, passengers will also have the option to book their rides at physical counters and self-service kiosks that will soon be available at the bus terminal.
There will also be an option of booking the taxis or auto-rickshaws exclusively on reserve basis or on the basis of sharing the rides just like taxi aggregators. The BDA plans to extend this service to other key locations in the city, including the railway station and Capital Hospital.
To bring this project to fruition, the BDA has initiated the process of selecting a suitable agency. This agency will be responsible for designing and implementing the prepaid taxi booking system.
As per the tender floated for the project, the agency will provide the service both through a mobile application and booking counters, to serve the needs of city’s residents and visitors.
The BDA officials say that the prepaid auto booking system addresses the evolving needs of urban transportation by combining convenience, safety, transparency and efficiency.
“This system has the potential to revolutionize the auto-rickshaw industry, providing passengers with a reliable and hassle-free mode of transportation while empowering drivers,” they added.
