BEV with Chinese flag

China’s battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market bounced in February. But which models recorded the best results? Autovista24 special content editor Phil Curry examines the latest data from EV Volumes.

After being outperformed by the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) market in recent months, China’s BEV market bounced back in February. Registrations of all-electric vehicles reached 430,661 units, up by 89.4% year on year. Over the first two months of 2025, 856,859 BEVs were delivered to customers, a rise of 40.6%.

Meanwhile, PHEVs maintained their strong run with another good performance in February. The technology achieved 299,247 registrations in the month, a rise of 61.3%. Across January and February, PHEVs saw 673,819 deliveries, a rise of 42.1%.

Comparing the two powertrains, BEVs made up 59% of all EV deliveries in China during February, while PHEVs achieved 41%. This gap of 18 percentage points (pp) was much bigger than the 6.2pp between BEVs and PHEVs recorded in January. The result highlights the strength of the all-electric market in the second month of 2025.

BEV best-sellers

The Geely Geome Xingyuan continued its commanding run to top the BEV market for the second consecutive month. With 28,588 registrations, it achieved another record total in its sixth month on the market. The performance left the model with a BEV market share of 6.6%.

After a poor performance in January, the BYD Seagull flew into second. It achieved 26,958 deliveries in the month, improving by 99.8% year on year. Its market share of 6.3% was up 0.4pp compared to February 2024.

In third was the Xiaomi SU7, jumping one position compared to its performance in January. With 23,728 registrations, the model recorded its second-best month since its launch in April last year. It recorded a share of 5.5% in February.

Taking fourth in the best-selling BEV chart was the Wuling Mini. It swapped places with the SU7, falling one position month on month. The model recorded 22,065 registrations, up 74.4% compared to February 2024. Due to increasing competition, its BEV market share fell by 0.5pp to 5.1%.

Rounding out the top five was the Tesla Model 3, marking its first foray into the top 10 this year. Its registrations tally reached 18,771 in the month, up 146.9% year on year. Its market share of 4.4% was up from the 3.3% recorded in February 2024.

Diverse BEV options

In sixth was the Xpeng M03, with 15,312 deliveries. In its seventh month on the market, it secured a 3.6% hold of total registrations.

However, its share of 2.5% was down 0.9pp year on year. The Yuan Up saw 10,490 deliveries in its 11th month on the market. It also secured a market share of 2.4% in the month.

Rounding out the top 10 was the Wuling Bingo, with 10,163 registrations. This was a 25.7% rise year on year, with its 2.4% market share down from 3.5% recorded last year.

Geely remains on top

With its strong performance across the first two months of the year, the Geely Geome Xingyuan has secured a strong lead. It recorded 56,734 registrations in this period, giving it a 6.6% share of the market. It sat nearly 10,000 units ahead of the Wuling Mini in second place.

The Wuling model hit 46,989 registrations in the first two months of the year, with a 5.5% market share. It was closely followed by the Xiaomi SU7, just 364 units behind in third place. With 46,625 registrations between January and February, it held a 5.4% market share.

BYD back in charge

Normal service returned to China’s PHEV market during February, as BYD dominated. The carmaker held the top four positions and placed eight models in the top 10.

Leading the way was the Song Plus. It secured 17,300 registrations in February, with growth of 69.7% year on year. This performance was enough to secure a 5.8% market share, improving on the 5.5% recorded in February 2024.

The BYD Qin L placed second, with 16,213 deliveries in its ninth month on the Chinese market. This gave the PHEV a 5.4% hold of total PHEV registrations. The Qin Plus rounded out the top three, with 15,881 units, a 26.3% drop year on year. Its 5.3% market share was a 6.3pp drop compared to February 2024.

The BYD hold at the top continued with the Song Pro taking fourth, thanks to 14,997 deliveries. The model improved registrations by 59.8%, although its 5% share of the market was 0.1pp down in comparison.

Completing the top five was the first non-BYD model in the chart. The Li Auto L6 secured 13,160 deliveries in its 11th month on sale, with a 4.4% market share as a result.

Changing fortunes

The BYD Seal 06 landed in sixth position during February, with 12,613 units taking to Chinese roads. In its 10th month on the market, it secured 4.2% of total PHEV registrations.

Following in seventh was the BYD Destroyer 05, with 10,117 registrations, a 45.5% increase year on year. This was enough for a 3.4% market share. However, due to increased competition, this was a 0.3pp drop compared to February 2024.

Eighth place went to January’s leading PHEV, the Geely Galaxy Starship 7. February marked the model’s worst month since its launch month of November 2024, with 10,070 units delivered. This was just 47 units behind the BYD Destroyer 05. It still managed a similar 3.4% market share, however.

Ninth and 10th went to BYD models. The Song L secured 9,193 registrations and a 3.1% market share, while the BYD Han saw 8,356 deliveries. This was up 190.4% year on year. The model improved its hold by 1.2pp, to 2.8% of total PHEV deliveries.

BYD models returned to the top of the year-to-date PHEV table and dominated with eight out of 10 spots.
