E-Cells Lab, a research center for electrochemistry within the University of Bologna, has been opened in collaboration with Ferrari and semiconductor firm NXP to advance knowledge of the materials and chemical and physical properties of lithium-ion battery cells.
The University of Bologna is providing a dedicated space with equipment to conduct advanced analyses. Ferrari is promoting and supporting the lab through the exchange of expertise with the university, and applications developed at the lab will be shared with technology partner NXP.
The lab comprises two areas: the first focused on preparing electrochemical materials and the second on analysis, tests and determining the characteristics of the materials. There will be an emphasis on solid-state tech, fast charging, thermal charging, cell safety and performance.
The results will help Ferrari to develop consistent language with its cell suppliers, with the aim of optimizing the performance of the batteries that will be assembled in its Maranello plants.
